The size, shape or position of the normal ear is most often a familial characteristic. The child with protruding ears is often subjected to unkind remarks or ridicule by his peers leading to feelings of self-consciousness, rejection or hostility. These same sensitivities can also be carried into adult life. Although hair styles in modern years have provided better opportunity for coverage, both males and females are requesting this operation frequently. Surgical correction is usually advised at the age of 4 to 5 years when the child is ready to enter school. By this time the ear itself has already reached almost adult shape. Surgical incisions are usually placed behind the ear. Scoring and excision of excess cartilage and skin is then performed. A total head dressing (turban type) is placed so that both ears can be protected, swelling minimized and discomfort limited. The bandages and sutures are removed in 5-7 days and then a head band or stockinette is worn by night for another month to preserve the new position of the ears.
Otoplasty or ear surgery can be successfully carried out accompanied with cheek and chin augmentation, rhinoplasty and face lift. We have the best cosmetic surgeons there are in the industry at our centers at Beverly Hills and Los Angeles.
