Eyelid Surgery or Blepharoplasty
Eliminate excess skin and fat bags from the eyelids with blepharoplasty. As with other areas of the face and neck that may exhibit wrinkles and bulges, these conditions are due to a combination of hereditary and aging factors. Progressive upper lid fullness over a long period of time may produce overhanging skin folds that result in partial visual obstruction. Although blepharoplasty is usually performed in conjunction with a face lift operation, it can also be performed independently mostly in younger males and females whose facial skin is still "tight." The aim of the operation is to produce a more rested, youthful looking appearance. When fatty tissues "bags" are removed they generally do not return.
The Operative Process
As in a face lift operation, blepharoplasty is performed under I.V. sedation and local anesthesia. Incisions are placed in the natural folds of the upper eyelids and right beneath the lashes on the lower eyelids. The procedure takes about one hour. No bandage is placed around the eyes, but ice compresses are placed over the eyelids for 24 to 48 hours to minimize swelling and bruising. Sutures are removed 4 to 5 days post-operatively and patients are able to resume their everyday activities sometimes with the help of dark glasses. Make-up is allowed on one week later. In the patients of Asian ancestry, puffiness of the upper eyelids, absence of an eyelid fold, and presence of an epicanthal fold next to the nose require a special technique to correct.
Otoplasty or Ear Correction
The size, shape, and position of the normal ear is most often a familial characteristic. The child with protruding ears is often subjected to unkind remarks or ridicule by his peers, leading to feelings of self-consciousness, rejection, or hostility. These same sensitivities can also be carried into adult life. Although hairstyles in modern years have provided better opportunity for coverage, both males and females request this operation frequently. Surgical correction is usually advised at the age of 4 to 5 years when the child is ready to enter school. By this time, the ear itself has already reached almost adult shape. Surgical incisions are usually placed behind the ear. Scoring and excision of excess cartilage and skin is then performed. A total head dressing (turban type) is placed so that both ears can be protected, swelling minimized and discomfort limited. The bandages and sutures are removed in 5-7 days and then a head band or stockinette is worn by night for another month to preserve the new position of the ears.
